Recommended Books in Spanish for Children and Young Adults
by Isabel Schon
Our avarage rating: 4.9
As with many of her other books, Isabel Schon now provides us with a much lacked and essential tool--1,055 annotations of fiction and nonfiction books written in or translated into Spanish. All entries were in print as of May 1996 and are organized into four sections: reference, nonfiction, publishers' series, and fiction. The book includes a useful appendix listing Spanish book dealers who sell the titles mentioned as well as three indexes--author, title, and subject. Schon recommends grade levels for the books but warns readers that these levels are subjective. As for the recommendations themselves, they are exquisite and highly diverse. Titles range from Mis Cinco Sentidos (My Five Senses) by Aliki, with translation by Daniel Santacruz (HarperCollins, 1995), to The Tree Is Older Than You Are: A Bilingual Gathering of Poems and Stories from Mexico with Paintings by Mexican Artists, selected by Naomi Shihab Nye (Simon & Schuster, 1995). This volume will be an indispensable resource for parents, teachers, and librarians who seek books in Spanish.

KidSpeak 10-in-1 Language Learning
by Transparent Language
Our avarage rating: 4.9
How can we tell that KidSpeak: 10-in-1 Language Learning is a superb language-learning package for kids? Because it's a bit too hard for Mom and Dad. The cognitive sponge that makes setting the VCR easy for your 7-year-old is the same cognitive sponge that makes foreign languages so easy--and exactly why having your kids use software like this is a terribly good idea, the younger the better.

Spanish Every Day: A Learning Adventure for Young Readers
by Dre Design (Illustrator), Denise Gilgannon (Illustrator), William C. Harvey
Our avarage rating: 4.8
Here's an easy and informal language-teaching book intended especially for families with younger children. The book dramatizes a day in the lives of children, starting as they wake up in the morning and concluding that night at bedtime. More than 400 cartoon-style illustrations reinforce vocabulary retention and clarify meanings. Boys and girls pick up new words, phrases, and language skills as they are guided from their bedrooms (toys, clothing, numbers) and through the house (names of family members, rooms, furniture). In the kitchen they learn Spanish words for appliances and foods. Outdoors and down the street, they pick up words for workers, cars, trucks, buses, and more. At school they discover Spanish words for objects in the playground and classroom. Back home again and ready for dinner, they learn more Spanish words until bedtime.

Action Spanish: Activity Starter Pack
by Catherine Bruzzone, Clare Beaton
Our avarage rating: 4.7
PreS-Gr 4-Learning Spanish doesn't have to be a dull echoing of a teacher's voice, or a boring worksheet. This package contains many activities that can teach and reinforce basic Spanish vocabulary. The cassette quickly introduces Spanish vocabulary and allows listeners to hear proper pronunciation and repeat the words, while reading along in the accompanying activity book. That's just for starters, however. The cassette then gives information about the games that make up the rest of the activity book. All Spanish words and songs needed for these games are modeled. Flashcards, games, a poster, and complete instructions are included. The games, songs, rhymes, and other activities reinforce colors, days of the week, numbers, animals, clothes and common phrases. Children will enjoy this introduction to Spanish.

Let's Learn Spanish Coloring Book
by Hazzan, Figueroa, Anne-Francoise Hazzan, S. William Pattis, Minerva Figueroa (Contributor)
Our avarage rating: 4.6
This book provides several pictures for each letter of the alphabet. The Spanish word or words are written in bold print. Most of the pictures are large and simple but some of the pictures have small detail which make it difficult for little hands to color. This book is a good supplement for children learning Spanish. However, if you do not speak Spanish it might be difficult to determine from a few of the pictures what the Spanish word means.
